My New Adventure

I am a solo traveler.  I love to travel solo and do so often, well I used to.  I occasionally take on a travel mate, but they must be vetted and agree to my fast pace of adventure.  I see, admire and move on.

I left my career as an insurance agent selling professional liability insurance to become an entrepreneur.  I invented a bedding product, the Better Bedder, have a patent and was on Shark Tank.  Things were looking good until the economy took a hard hit.  People just were not buying as many Better Bedders as they were the previous four years.  What if the economy doesn’t recover?   What if the Better Bedder doesn’t make it?  What will I do?  Go back to selling insurance, which is now basically a desk job?  No, I would not survive working from home toggling to make my light green.

I’ll be an expedited shipper or a ‘hot shot’ hauler or a truck driver or a OTR van hauler, Get Paid to Travel!  I am still not sure what to call myself when people ask me what I do.  If you ask me today, I’ll respond “I pick up loads for people and get to travel across the country”.

When I solo travel I usually post my adventures on Facebook or Snap Chat.  Someone suggested I keep a Blog.  A blog will work better for me because I can sit down and recap my day or week.  I’ll take pictures or videos when I can and won’t have to worry about capturing the exact moment live.  As with my past travels, I don’t realize those ‘moments’ were ‘moments’ until I was able to recount what actually transpired.  This way I can dissect the situation and give you my Nita thoughts and opinion.

So far I have:

  • Bought a used van – oh the choices, low top, mid top, high top, extended.. I just went with a regular low top Ford Transit sprinter. Why?  With a low top I would not have to worry about me cutting off the top of the van going in garage parking lots or a drive thru.  I would totally forget and oops the van is now a convertible.
  • Found a company to work for, V3 Transportation, out of Ohio. I thought this would be my best route to learn the business.
  • Got all my and van certifications needed to operate state to state. This included a Medical Card, DOT inspection, CAT inspection, Cargo van insurance, etc.
  • V3 Transportation training in Ohio
  • Hauled two loads so far – First was an enormous 970lb cable going from Lawrenceville, Georgia to New Florence, Pennsylvania; Second was Magnetic Testing equipment going from New Castle Pennsylvania, to Batesburg, South Carolina.

I am still learning and will get better at this and come up with a schedule.  Right now I plan on working 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off.

I sleep in my van and shower at Planet Fitness.

My next blog will be about my first two weeks.

See ya when I see ya,

Nita

P.S. Judy is holding down my Better Bedder duties.  I am not sure she will be riding her bike to the post office, but hey not everyone can be Nita.
